<p><span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Tree pruning is not just about enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your trees; it goes beyond that. Here are some key reasons why tree pruning is essential:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″><b>Promotes tree health:</b><span style=”font-weight: 400;”> Regular pruning helps eliminate dead, diseased, or damaged branches, preventing the spread of infection or decay to other parts of the tree. By removing these weakened branches, the overall health of the tree is improved.</span></li>
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″><b>Encourages growth:</b><span style=”font-weight: 400;”> Pruning stimulates new growth by directing the tree’s energy towards the remaining branches. This promotes a more robust and well-balanced tree structure.</span></li>
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″><b>Improves safety:</b><span style=”font-weight: 400;”> Overgrown branches can pose a risk to people and property, especially during storms or high winds. Pruning removes hazardous limbs, reducing the chance of accidents or property damage.</span></li>
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″><b>Aids in fruit production:</b><span style=”font-weight: 400;”> Fruit trees benefit greatly from pruning as it enhances air circulation and sunlight exposure, leading to improved fruit quality and higher yields.</span></li>

Tree Pruning & Trimming — Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between pruning and trimming?
In casual use the words are interchangeable. In professional practice, “pruning” refers to selective branch removal for tree health, structure, or safety — done at specific times of year for specific species. “Trimming” usually refers to shaping for aesthetics or reducing size. Both follow the same ANSI A300 standards we work to.
When is the best time to prune trees in the Pacific Northwest?
Most deciduous trees (maple, birch, alder) prune best in late winter through early spring while dormant. Conifers (Douglas fir, hemlock, cedar) tolerate pruning year-round but respond best in late winter. Cherry, plum, and other Prunus species should be pruned in midsummer to reduce silver-leaf disease risk. We schedule by species when timing matters.
How much should be pruned at one time?
The standard rule for healthy mature trees is no more than 25% of the live canopy in a single year, and significantly less for stressed or older specimens. “Topping” — cutting the main leader back to stubs — is never appropriate and causes long-term structural failure. We follow ANSI A300 and ISA Best Management Practices on every job.
Do you do view pruning or window pruning?
Yes. View restoration through selective canopy thinning, limb-up pruning, and careful crown reduction is one of our specialties — common in Magnolia, Queen Anne, View Ridge, and the homes lining Lake Stevens. We protect the tree’s long-term health while opening sight lines.
Will pruning hurt my tree?
Proper pruning at the right time of year is one of the best things you can do for tree health. Improper pruning — flush cuts, lion-tailing, topping, or pruning in the wrong season — can cause decay, structural failure, or pest pressure. The difference is training and judgment, which is why we don’t subcontract.
Do you prune fruit trees?
Yes. We do dormant-season fruit-tree pruning for apple, pear, cherry, plum, and fig — common across Snohomish County rural properties. Annual maintenance pruning improves fruit yield and keeps the tree at a manageable size for harvest.
