Seattle Tree Permits and the Tree Protection Ordinance

Seattle is one of the most regulated tree-removal cities in Washington State. Any tree six inches or larger in diameter on private property may be subject to SMC 25.11 review depending on lot zoning, tree species, and whether the tree is classified as a “Tier” tree or “Exceptional” tree under the 2023 ordinance update.

Tier 1 trees (24″+ DBH conifers, 12″+ DBH ponderosa pine, certain heritage species) require a permit and replacement planting before removal. Tier 2 and Tier 3 trees have lower thresholds but still require an arborist report and SDCI tracking. We provide ISA-aligned arborist assessments, file the SDCI removal application, and coordinate with the city’s Tree Service Provider Registry — Arbor Vet is registered to perform regulated tree work inside city limits.

Storm Patterns Specific to Seattle

Seattle’s storm exposure is different from the inland Snohomish County valleys we also serve. The city sits in the rain shadow of the Olympics for much of the winter, but Pacific frontal systems push directly across Puget Sound and hit the Magnolia bluff, Queen Anne, West Seattle, and the Madrona slope first. Wind events that register as 35 mph at SeaTac frequently gust to 55+ mph along the western shoreline.

The November–February storm window typically produces three to five wind events that drop or break trees citywide.
