How much does it cost to remove a tree?

Stump Grinding & Removal — Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Stump grinding chips the stump and major surface roots down to 6–12 inches below grade using a hydraulic grinder. The remaining root mass decays naturally over a few years. Full stump removal physically extracts the stump and root ball — required for new construction, foundation work, or replanting in the same spot. Most homeowners choose grinding because it’s faster, less invasive to surrounding lawn, and significantly less expensive.
How deep do you grind?
Standard grinding goes to 6 inches below grade — enough for sod, mulch, or topsoil. Deeper grinding (8–12 inches) is available for paver patios, foundation work, or fence-post installations. We confirm depth requirements before starting.
How long does stump grinding take?
A typical residential stump (12–24 inch diameter) grinds in 30–60 minutes. Larger conifer stumps with broad root flares can take 2–3 hours. We bring all the gear we need on a single trip — no return visits.
Do you take the chips away?
By default, the stump grindings are left in place to backfill the hole — this is what most homeowners want for replanting or sod. If you’d prefer chips hauled, we can do that for an additional charge, or we can bring in topsoil to replace them.
Can you grind stumps near utility lines or fences?
Yes, with appropriate care. We call 811 and have utility lines marked before grinding any stump within 18 inches of an underground service. Stumps next to fences require a smaller-footprint grinder, which we have. We protect adjacent landscaping with mats.
Do you do stump grinding only, or only with tree removal?
Both. Standalone stump grinding is something we do regularly — including stumps left by other tree services, storm-fallen trees, or older removals. Schedule independently or as part of a removal job.
